===WHAT IS BEESWAX ALL ABOUT?===

Beeswax Magazine is an independent journal of literature and art based in Oakland, California. We have published six issues so far, most of which are available for purchase online and in Bay Area bookstores.

We come from an eclectic background of music, writing, printmaking and visual art, and our foremost goal in Beeswax is to create a medium that approaches writing and art in a new way, encouraging everything from collaboration to cross-genre work. We are lucky enough to know a wealth of writers and artists who do just these things in their work already -- writers who play music, musicians who are writers, illustrators who write nonfiction, poets who paint, artists and writers who work together to produce graphic-oriented work, what have you... And, when we sat down to think about all the fantastic talent that we know, our biggest question was this: where can writers and artists like these showcase their work? Thus Beeswax. We welcome submissions of all varieties, from all over the place -- please see the Submissions page for details.

With access to a printmaking studio and a few years of typesetting experience under our belts, we are also keen on including classic printmaking/bookmaking elements in each issue: Issue 1 has a 3-color letterpressed cover done with type and photopolymer plates; Issue 2 features a hand-sewn binding and letterpressed cover; Issue 3 has a hand-printed wraparound cover that turns into a full-sized poster; Issue 4 has a 2-color letterpressed cover and a screwpost block binding; Issue 5 has a linen-bound cover letterpressed in two colors and a hand-sewn binding; and Issue 6 is a build-it yourself book with all parts (and instructions) included. Incorporating these handmade components into each issue is integral to Beeswax -- while we're all about the new directions in which writing and art are going, we also celebrate the classic traditions of printmaking & bookmaking.
